The United Nations SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals

Politics

CREATED
13 Jul 2022

The United Nations put together a list of 17 goals in 2015, related to global development, which is to be achieved by 2030. These work as a blueprint for a better, sustainable future for all and are collectively called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The seventeenth SDG, Partnership for the Goals, is to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development. This goal is to ensure that we join hands, when needed, to create a better and more significant impact on the global community and the environment. Recent statistics reveal that the road ahead is long - for instance, the debt burden on developing countries remains stable at about 3% of export revenue and almost 50% of the world (especially from developing countries) is not connected to the internet.

It goes without saying that not all countries are at the same level of development and a few, especially the developed ones are doing better. There is a need for countries to extend their support in any form of resource possible to achieve global development. As mentioned, it's early days and to understand this, let us take a closer look at the sub-goals under this SDG.

  1. Mobilise resources to improve domestic revenue collection

  2. Implement all development assistance commitments

  3. Mobilise financial resources for developing countries

  4. Assist developing countries in attaining debt sustainability

  5. Invest in the least developed countries

  6. Knowledge sharing and cooperation for access to science, technology, and innovation

  7. Promote sustainable technologies to developing countries

  8. Strengthen the science, technology, and innovation capacity of least developed countries

  9. Enhance SDG capacity in developing countries

  10. Promote a universal trading system under the WTO

  11. Increase the exports of developing countries

  12. Remove trade barriers for least developed countries

  13. Enhance global macroeconomic stability

  14. Enhance policy coherence for sustainable development

  15. Respect national leadership to implement policies for the SDGs

  16. Enhance the goal partnership for sustainable development

  17. Encourage effective partnership

  18. Enhance availability of reliable data

  19. Further development of measurements of progress

These sub-goals provide us with an overview of various multi-faceted areas that need to be worked upon and s emphasise the need to help and assist the least developed countries to ensure sustainable development. In addition to this there is a need for the public and private sectors in these countries - and in others- to work together.

Fulfilment of this SDG goal would be crucial since it may affect the fulfilment of other SDGs, directly or otherwise. Ensuring partnership for all will help to improve the country’s economy, eliminate inequalities, and improve infrastructure.

Based on these, individuals, organisations, and governments across the globe need to establish their strategies on the goals as well as sub-goals to bring in a focussed approach to the eradication of social evils in specific communities.

In this series of articles, we will discuss each of the SDGs in detail to understand the role of countries and stakeholders in fulfilling these sustainable development goals.
