Wimbledon's Green Match Point- Aiming for Grand Slam Sustainability Success.

Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious and iconic tennis tournaments in the world, has been actively working on sustainability initiatives to reduce its environmental impact and promote responsible practices. All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), along with other major sporting bodies and events, has a meaningful role to play in helping to protect the environment, today and for the future.

AELTC’s approach to the environment is just one aspect of Wimbledon’s capacity and responsibility to act as a force for good, delivering a positive and sustainable impact on our economy, society and the environment in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Wimbledon aims to have and advocate for a positive environmental impact by:

  • Net zero operational emissions - Reducing emissions from operations to ‘net zero’ -  This means increasing energy efficiency, decarbonisation of energy, heat and transport and balancing any remaining emissions through carbon compensation.

  • Resource efficiency - Being a resource-efficient organisation - This means to reduce the amount of resources, increasing proportion of recycled content as well as the amount of materials reused. The ultimate goal is to design out waste, keeping products in use so that nothing goes to waste.

  • Biodiversity gain - Contributing to a ‘net gain’ in biodiversity – This means to increase the abundance and diversity of plant and animal species appropriate to local ecology.

  • Inspiring wider action- Using the influence to inspire wider action - Aims to reach beyond the boundaries through partnership, leadership, and collaboration with other major events and bodies in the sports industry and beyond.

AELTC has been investing in renewable energy sources to power the event. They have installed solar panels and other renewable energy infrastructure to reduce the tournament's carbon footprint.

The All England Club has worked to preserve and enhance the natural biodiversity of the Wimbledon grounds. They have taken steps to protect local wildlife and promote sustainable landscaping practices.  The club has made efforts to incorporate sustainable materials and construction techniques in new developments and renovations, ensuring that the facilities align with environmental best practices.

While they aim to exemplify best practice through the day to day actions and decisions, it is equally important to work together with partners and stakeholders on using our platform to amplify the benefits of a sustainable approach, and encourage and support wider action beyond reach.

Wimbledon encourages fans and participants to use public transportation or other sustainable means of travel to reduce the environmental impact of commuting to and from the tournament. It leverages its global platform to raise awareness about sustainability issues. They engage fans, players, and partners through educational campaigns to encourage responsible environmental practices beyond the tournament.

It's important to note that sustainability efforts are often an ongoing and evolving process and Wimbledon has continued to expand and improve its sustainability initiatives. Changes to our climate are accelerating and it takes a responsibility to play the part, mitigating own impacts, ensuring a climate resilient estate for the future and using the influence to support this important cause.
